Grant Wood Abstract Mosaic

The fifth graders began this project by discussing Abstract art, how it is made, what the meaning of it is, and why people like it. Each student was given a small 1.5" x 1.5" square cut from a painting by the artist Grant Wood. The small squares were filled with areas of shapes and colors and the original painting was not recognizable. The students were then given a 3" x 3" square of drawing paper, then we discussed how to enlarge the small square on to the larger square.

The students then worked with pencil and colored pencil to draw the smaller square onto the bigger square. When all of the students had finished their 3" square, the class worked together to assemble the 3" squares into a larger 12" x 18" mosaic. The final mosaics were: Fall Plowing, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, and Stone City all by Grant Wood.
